What should you decide first when adding RFID to garments?

The first decision is not the technology. It is the use case. Counting cartons without opening them, tracking a uniform through hundreds of wash cycles, and letting a shopper verify authenticity in store are three different jobs that call for different bands and different attachment methods. The order is use case → band → tag form → attachment step → acceptance criteria. Reverse it and pick the tag first, and you will usually pick again.

The use case decides everything downstream

"We want to adopt RFID" is usually one of several distinct goals. Change the goal and the required read range, tag lifespan, reader hardware and cost structure all change with it. So the first question is not which tag to buy, but what problem you are solving.

Where two goals apply, splitting the bands is the usual answer — UHF for logistics, HF for authentication. That means two tags and two systems, with the cost and administration that follow. A single tag can also carry both channels, which is covered further down.

How HF and UHF differ

RFID is not one technology. Different bands behave differently in physics, so each is good at a different job. These are the differences that actually matter in apparel.

Read range cuts both ways

The long read range of UHF is what compresses a stock count, and it is also what reads things you did not intend to read. Stock on the next fixture, or behind a warehouse wall, lands in the same count and the number gets worse rather than better. Gate placement and power tuning are a large part of any UHF rollout. HF has the opposite behaviour: it reads the one garment you presented.

Can the customer read it themselves

This difference matters more than it first appears. HF (NFC) can be read on an ordinary smartphone with no extra hardware. That makes authenticity checks, product information, care guidance and resale history possible as a consumer touchpoint. UHF requires a dedicated reader, so that touchpoint does not exist.

Band allocation differs by country

HF 13.56MHz is the same band everywhere. UHF sits somewhere between 860 and 960MHz depending on the country, and published figures for a single country sometimes disagree. If UHF tags are going onto export volume, verify the destination market's allocation separately. Tags that read cleanly at home failing on a local reader abroad is a real failure mode.

What has actually been measured

Claims about RFID are plentiful and measurements are scarce. The study with the largest sample and the clearest provenance is Project Zipper, run jointly by the Auburn University RFID Lab and GS1 US. Between June 2017 and June 2018 it tracked more than one million items moving between five retailers and eight brand owners.

Read the figure for what it is: this is accuracy across the supply chain link. It measures whether what a brand shipped matches what a retailer received. It is not a figure for shop-floor stock accuracy or for uniform management after laundering. The same technology delivers different improvement depending on which link you apply it to.

Which tag form to attach

Once the band is set, the form follows. Two questions settle most of it: does it have to survive laundering, and is the customer meant to remove it.

Hang tags are the cheapest and easiest, but the information stops at the point of sale. If logistics and stock control are all you need, that is a sufficient choice. If the garment's whole life has to be followed, the tag has to stay on the garment.

Which production step to attach at

The same tag costs differently and behaves differently depending on when it goes on. The later the step, the easier the attachment and the shorter the traceable span.

The thing that most often goes wrong in practice is sewing position. If the position varies garment to garment, the reader meets a different angle each time and read rates wobble. Fix the position at the sample stage and record it on the confirmation sample. What to check at that stage is covered in How is a garment sample made?

When it has to survive the wash and use both channels

Uniforms, rental garments and hotel or hospital linen are laundered repeatedly, and that changes the requirements entirely. An ordinary tag meets water, detergent, hot drying and press pressure a few times before the antenna breaks or the chip bond fails. In this segment, durability design and sewing method decide the outcome, not read range.

The earlier trade-off lands on top of that. Take wash durability and phone readability and you give up bulk reading, and the reverse holds too. So operations that need both usually attach two tags.

RFID-X, developed by Korean Friends, is a sewn-in sensor aimed at exactly this gap. A single tag carries both NFC (13.56MHz) and UHF (860–960MHz) channels. A shopper reads that same tag on a phone to verify authenticity and product information, while logistics reads several garments at once with a handheld reader or a gate. There is no need for two tags or two systems.

On top of that it is sewn into the garment like a care label and designed to operate through washing, drying and ironing. The work covers not only the tag but automatic attachment on the production line and history tracking through to store display. The underlying technology is published as registered patents, so the registration numbers can be checked directly.

Where the cost actually lands

Attachment labour, not tag unit price

Quotes are usually compared on tag unit price, but the larger variable is the labour to attach it. Bringing it into the sewing line needs initial line adjustment; attaching at inspection adds headcount. A tag that is a few cents cheaper loses if it adds seconds per garment.

Reader and gate infrastructure

UHF needs gates, handheld readers and fixed antennas. Depending on store count and warehouse layout, this frequently exceeds the tag spend. HF carries a lighter hardware burden but reads fewer items at once, so the operating procedure has to be designed differently.

System integration

If there is no decision about where the reads go, you end up with tags attached and nowhere to put the data. How it connects to the existing ERP or WMS, and what coding scheme to use, are items to agree before choosing a tag, not after.

Three common misconceptions

"Attach tags and stock will be accurate"

It will not. Accuracy comes from deciding when and how reads happen. Unless there is an operating rule for who reads what at intake, movement and dispatch, a stock count with tags looks much like a stock count without them.

"RFID replaces barcodes"

They normally run together. Barcodes are cheap, readable everywhere, and the base infrastructure for POS and logistics. RFID is better understood as a layer that adds what barcodes cannot do — bulk simultaneous reads, per-item tracking after laundering, contactless authentication.

"Attach once and it is done"

Tags are consumables. Even washable ones have a life, and finding and replacing failed tags is part of operations. Agree the expected failure rate and the replacement procedure at adoption, not later.

Frequently asked questions

Can RFID be used on small production runs?

Yes. The smaller the run, the larger the share taken by set-up cost rather than tag price, because fixing the sewing position, adjusting the line and configuring readers are one-time tasks regardless of quantity. For low volumes it can make sense to start with a simple form such as a hang tag, then move to a sewn-in sensor once the operation is settled.

Can NFC and UHF be used together?

Yes. The common arrangement is two tags — UHF for logistics and stock, NFC for consumer authentication and laundry management — which doubles both cost and administration. A dual-band tag carrying both channels is the other route. Korean Friends' RFID-X works that way: one sewn-in sensor handles phone reads and bulk UHF reads together.

How many wash cycles will it survive?

It varies substantially with construction, wash type (domestic or industrial), drying temperature and sewing position. Industrial laundering is far harsher in both temperature and chemistry than domestic. Validate against the wash conditions you will actually use and ask for repeat-cycle test results under those conditions rather than a catalogue figure.

Can the same tags go on export volume?

HF 13.56MHz is the same band worldwide, so there is no band issue. UHF allocation varies by country and the destination market has to be checked. Labelling requirements are a separate matter, covered in What documents and certifications does apparel export require?

Will it integrate with our existing ERP?

Usually yes, but the scope has to be set first. Whether reads pass through as-is, whether validation rules sit in between, and how error records are handled all need answers — otherwise data accumulates and goes unused. Agreeing the coding scheme comes first.
